The mission of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) is to achieve excellence in research, education and service programs.
These three objectives are primarily supported by the UH general and tuitions funds but also by extramural awards from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Hawaii Community Foundation and others. Another important support comes from donations.
At JABSOM, we believe that if we are asking others to give, our ʻohana should set the example. Each year, JABSOM conducts an internal giving campaign – Starting From the Inside Out – that asks faculty and staff to provide financial support for the school. To date, our ʻohana has donated over $5.7 million to support numerous of projects and programs.
It’s easy to donate ONLINE through the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation (UHF)
There are several UHF funds that support research and education in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Every gift made to one of these funds – no matter how small – will make a difference to the students and our research efforts in the department.
Geoffrey Ashton Graduate Student Travel Fund
Support conference travels for students in the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program. Fund #126-2500-4

Unrestricted support for students in the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program. Fund #120-9974-4
Diabetes Research Enhancement Fund
Diabetes is a serious, common, and costly disease, and is currently the 7th leading cause of death nationwide and in Hawaiʻi. In our State, ~ 13% (1 out of every 9 individuals) of the adult population has diabetes and 41% are pre-diabetic. Importantly, 22% of Native Hawaiians are diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and another 15% in a pre-diabetic status. This fund supports our recently created Diabetes Research Center which is dedicated to the study of pre-diabetes and diabetes and the fostering of a new generation of scientists dedicated to Diabetes research. Three Faculty of the in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology are members of the Diabetes Research Center Fund #127-7860-4
The Pathobiology of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticsum
The Le Saux laboratory works towards understanding the molecular events leading to abnormal calcification in rare diseases such as pseudoxanthoma elastic (PXE) and a closely related disorder called generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI). These funds established nearly 2 decades ago have been instrumental in the study of these debilitating diseases, through their respective animal models – and has led to the development of treatment options, some of which are currently testing in clinical trials. Fund #124-6290-4
Preclinical Alzheimer’s Fund
This fund supports a wide range of research, educational and professional development activities within the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, related to Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias. Fund #125-8320-4
Martin D. Rayner, PhD, Neurosciences Research, Education and Training Fund
This fund supports a research, educational activities within the Neurospecialization track of Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program Program.
